South Lake Tahoe travel offers the perfect opportunity to explore hidden gems while enjoying breathtaking scenery. Recently, we drove down Highway 49 from our home in Penn Valley, CA. We made the most of our day by stopping at local shops, taking in the stunning views at Emerald Bay, and grabbing a bite in Truckee before heading home.

Moreover, here’s a glimpse into our adventure. Along with some of the best places you should check out on your own South Lake Tahoe travel journey.

Exploring Hidden Gems on Your South Lake Tahoe Travel Adventure

While South Lake Tahoe is known for its popular attractions, we focused on a more laid-back experience. We started by exploring a few charming shops in town. It’s always fun to explore the local businesses that reflect the community’s unique vibes. Moreover, we found some delightful spots that offered everything from outdoor gear to locally crafted souvenirs.

After our stop in town, we drove to the famous Emerald Bay overlook. Then view here is breathtaking. In addition, Emerald Bay is a must-see, even for locals like us.

FOR YOUR PLANNING PURPOSES

Best Time to Visit

  • Summer (June – August): Ideal for water activities, hiking, and outdoor events. Expect crowds.
  • Fall (September – November): Cooler weather, fewer crowds, beautiful autumn foliage.
  • Winter ( December – February): Perfect for snow sports and cozy cabin stays.
  • Spring (March – May):  Quiet season with budding wildflowers and great rates.

A Bite to Eat in Truckee

After enjoying Emerald Bay, we headed north to enjoy a meal in Truckee.  Smokey’s Kitchen in Truckee is known for its delicious BBQ. In addition, there are plenty of other options to satisfy your cravings. I highly recommend their pulled pork sandwich. It’s a hearty meal perfect after a day of exploring the Tahoe region. This time, we opted to try the Smokey BBQ and Cheddar and the Hawaiian burgers. To complement the burgers, we had garlic fries, coleslaw, and a strawberry shake.
