Here are the spots worth building a fall getaway around, whether you want thrills or just cider and a corn maze.
California Halloween Destinations Worth the Trip
Disneyland Halloween Time, Anaheim
Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort runs from late summer through October 31, with seasonal decorations, themed treats, and the Haunted Mansion in its Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. The big draw is the Oogie Boogie Bash, a separate ticketed after-hours party held on select nights from August 18 through October 31, 2026, over at Disney California Adventure. Kids trick-or-treat, the villains come out, and it sells out early every year, so this is the one to book well ahead.
If anyone in your group uses a scooter, here’s what I’ve learned about doing Disneyland with a mobility scooter.
Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival
Half Moon Bay sits on the coast just south of San Francisco, and every October it throws one of the state’s best-known pumpkin festivals. This year Half Moon Bart Art & Pumpkin Festival runs October 17 and 18, 2026, on Main Street, with food, art, and the famous giant pumpkins on display. If you want to see the record-breakers, the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off happens a few days earlier on October 12. It’s free to attend, but parking fills fast, so go early.
Winchester Mystery House, San Jose
This one is spooky year-round. The sprawling Winchester mansion has around 160 rooms, staircases that lead nowhere, and doors that open onto walls, all built by Sarah Winchester over decades. Daily tours run all year, and in the fall it leans into the season with special flashlight and Halloween tours. Those dates shift each year, so check their events page for the current schedule before you plan around it.
Apple Hill, Camino
About an hour east of Sacramento in the Sierra foothills, Apple Hill is a cluster of family ranches that open up in the fall. Think apples, fresh pies, cider, pumpkin patches, and a few corn mazes. Weekends get packed, so a weekday visit or an early start makes a big difference.
Napa and Sonoma in Autumn
Fall is harvest season in wine country. The vineyards turn gold and red, the crush is on, and the whole region slows down a little from the summer rush. Some wineries and towns hold their own Halloween and harvest events. A good pick if you want the fall feeling at an adult pace.
Nevada City and the Sierra Foothills
Up in the foothills, Nevada City is a historic gold rush town with a walkable downtown, Victorian storefronts, and real fall color in the surrounding hills. The old buildings and gas lamps already feel a little haunted, and the town leans into Halloween with local happenings downtown. It’s a quieter, cozier fall weekend than the big destinations.
The foothills are worth a trip year-round, and there’s plenty more on my California bucket list.
Planning a California Fall Getaway
You don’t need a cross-country flight for a great Halloween trip. California gives you theme park parties, coastal festivals, foothill towns, and wine country color, often within a few hours of each other.
If you’d like help turning one of these into a real trip, dates, where to stay, and how to time it around the crowds, that’s what I do. I can also plan around mobility needs if that’s part of your group, so everyone gets to enjoy it.
