You can become a travel agent from home without a degree, without a background in the travel industry, and without quitting your job first. What you do need is the right training, a good host agency, and a realistic picture of what building this kind of business actually looks like.

I spent 32 years in healthcare administration before I made this move. I came into travel new to the industry, not new to business. This guide covers what I learned, what it costs, and what the real steps are.

Whether you want to book travel on the side or build something full-time from home, here is where to start.

Why Become A Travel Agent?

People come to this business from a lot of different places. Some have a real love for travel and want to do something with it. Others are looking for flexibility, a career change, or income they can build around their actual life.

A few of the most common reasons:

  • Work from home and set your own hours
  • Earn commissions on travel you book for clients
  • Get access to supplier perks and discounted travel for yourself
  • Build something that fits around your schedule, not the other way around
  • Turn what you already know about travel into value for other people

This tends to work well for people who like to plan, enjoy helping others, and want income tied to their own effort. You do not need prior experience in the travel industry. You do need to be willing to learn the business and show up consistently.

How to Earn Money as a Travel Agent

Commissions on Bookings

Your main income comes from commissions. When you book travel for a client, the supplier pays a commission on that booking. Hotels, cruise lines, resorts, tour operators, and vacation packages all work this way. You earn a percentage of that commission through your host agency.

As your client base grows, your earning potential grows with it. Agents who specialize and build repeat-client relationships tend to earn more over time than those who stay generalists.

Perks and Discounts

Most suppliers offer special rates and educational benefits for travel agents. Discounted travel, familiarization trips, and early access to new products are part of how you stay informed so you can make better recommendations for your clients.

What Training Is Needed to Become a Travel Agent?

You do not need a degree or prior travel-industry experience. Training comes with your host agency and is designed to get you booking travel with confidence. Here is what to expect:

  • Certification Programs — Structured courses that build your knowledge and give you industry-recognized credentials
  • Live Webinars — Weekly sessions where experienced agents share what is working right now
  • Supplier Events and Seminars — Online and in-person events that deepen your expertise on specific destinations and travel types

Major suppliers also offer their own free certification programs. Disney has the College of Disney Knowledge. Sandals has the Sandals Specialist certification. If you plan to specialize in a particular type of travel, completing these makes a real difference in how confidently you can answer client questions.

What Is a Host Agency?

A host agency acts as your business partner. These companies are already accredited and licensed to book travel. When you join one, you get access to the tools, credentials, and supplier relationships you need to run a real travel business.

Here is what you typically get when you join a host agency:

  • Access to major booking platforms
  • Commissions from travel partners including hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators
  • On-demand and live training
  • Ongoing support and mentorship
  • A personal booking website

Some host agencies also offer the option to build a team and earn additional income through leadership and mentorship. That step is completely optional. Many agents build solid businesses focused entirely on booking travel.

Types of Trips You Can Book as a Travel Agent

One of the best things about this business is how many directions you can take it. The type of travel you specialize in shapes who your clients are and how you market yourself.

Leisure Vacations

Family trips, romantic getaways, honeymoons, and solo travel. This is where most new agents start. Each booking is a chance to understand your clients well enough to make the right call for their situation.

Corporate Travel

Business conferences, incentive trips, and company retreats. Corporate clients often have specific logistics and budget requirements. Getting those right builds long-term relationships with clients who book consistently.

Group Tours

Reunions, school trips, and special-interest travel clubs. Group travel has more moving pieces, but the commissions reflect that. Agents who get comfortable with group logistics often find it becomes a significant part of their income.

Specialty Travel

Cruises, destination weddings, wellness retreats, adventure travel, accessible travel. Specialty niches let you build deep expertise and position yourself as the go-to advisor for that type of trip.

What Are the Costs to Become a Travel Agent?

Starting a travel business has a low overhead compared to most small businesses. No retail space, no inventory, no equipment beyond what you already have.

With InteleTravel, the host agency I work through, the Travel Agent Option is $179.95 to start and then $39.95 per month after a 30-day trial. That covers:

  • Professional training including certification programs and live webinars
  • Booking tools used by working travel advisors
  • Industry credentials and supplier access
  • A personal booking website

Before Signing Up: My Experience

Turning Passion into Purpose

When I started in travel, I was new to the industry, not new to business. I had spent 32 years managing operations, teams, and budgets in healthcare administration. I had also built an online business before this.

What I did not have was experience booking travel professionally. So I treated it the way I approach most things: I learned the systems, completed the training, and asked questions until things made sense.

The learning curve is real. The first few months are about getting comfortable with the tools and building your product knowledge. The agents who do well take the training seriously from day one.

What You Can Expect from Me

As your mentor, I will share what I have learned, help you navigate the early stages, and be honest with you about what the business actually looks like. You do not have to figure it out alone, and I am not going to pretend it is easier than it is.

How to Prepare to Become a Travel Agent

You can take these steps before or after you enroll. Either way, they help you start with more direction.

Reflect on Your Vision

What kind of travel do you want to specialize in? Who are the clients you most want to work with? A clear picture of your direction makes every other decision easier.

Choose a Name for Your Business

Pick something that reflects your personality or your niche. Check that the name is available as a domain and on the social platforms you plan to use.

Set Up a Professional Email

A dedicated business email keeps things organized and looks more professional to clients from day one.

Create Social Media Accounts

You do not need to be on every platform. Pick one or two where your potential clients spend time and start building a presence there.

Outline Your First Goals

What do you want to accomplish in your first 30 days? Completing initial training? Booking your first client? Specific early targets help you build momentum instead of just staying busy.
